The Great American Pastime; Complacency

Stuff.
That's what life is about to us; stuff.
Stuff we don't have.
Stuff we want.
Stuff we want but can't have and so we spend all our time, money, and energy into getting it.
Stuff.
But why?
Why do we need have a t.v. for almost every room in our house? The living room, the family room, our bedrooms, the basement, the "man cave".
And why do they all need to be top-of-the-line LED flatscreens? All with its own DVR?

Simple; to distract us.
To distract us from the real world.
Sitting in our "perfect" little house watching t.v., playing video games, playing with the dog, "veggin out" on the couch is not the real world.

It is a world that we hav created to please ourselves. To make ourselves feel good, and at the same time distract us from the world, to block it out.
We've made a containment unit for ourselves, our own jail cells.
Sure we "socialize"; parties, sports, clubs, youth groups.

But we do the same things there...always socializing with the same people and groups and doing the same things at the same places talking about the same things.
We think we are "livin' the good life".
But when something happens to disturbe our perfect little world we created, then we freak out.
Our car breaks down, we need a new A.C. or heater, or, god forbid, our ipod or cell phone breaks!
Or even worse! A new model of said things comes out and we are stuck with the "old" one!
We don't feel right until we replace it
And then you have the scenario where you go to some other captive soul's house and you see that they have 5 t.v.s and you only have 4!
Well then that is simply inexcusable and you must get another one, right?

Let's say you get a raise, instead of saving it for when u need it or giving back to the world and to people that need it, you do what?
You do exactly what our consumeristic society tells you do; raise your standard of living of course!
But, once you raise your standard of living, there's no going back...like a lion that's tasted human flesh, you won't go back to a lesser life style...

And that's why we have so many problems, so much debt. Because once people waste all their extra money, they can't afford their new lifestyle, so what are they supposed to do? They can't go back, absolutely not! That would be unthinkable, no, what they do is borrow.
Borrow money and things that they can't pay back.
Problem.

Complacency:
Our self-made jail cells we call reality, life...
We think it's perfect, and we want nothing to disturb it.
So when an opportunity comes that could have a real world benefit, that could help someone or some cause, we first consider whether or not it will disturb "our world". If it does then we look the other way, instead we go to the mall and buy more stuff.
More clothes.
More games.
More movies.
More things that
We.
Don't.
Need.
After all, it's the Great American Pastime
And who could pass up an opportunity like that?
